Give me your tired, your poor... and I will sell them on e-bay!

Some people can take a huddled mass of cloth diapers yearning for breath and give them new life. I'm not one of them.

I made/sewed the curtains, bumper, ottoman and decorations for my daughter's nursery. Everything was coordinated, cute and from the looks of everything well made. The sad reality came when the bumper took a spin in the washer and dryer. My true skills were unveiled from the mask of cuteness.

Now, with this lesson learned, I do not pretend to think my sewing skills will suffice for the wear and tear of my cloth diapers. What's a girl addicted to fluff to do? Well, first add up how much it would cost to get new diapers. Not an option. Go to plan B, get diapers converted to snaps and restored for a reasonable cost. Good contender. Now, for the plan that makes me excited! Find things, old diapers, used baby clothes, the wretched refuse of your house and sell it on e-bay. Take the money you receive in your paypal account from said items, add the amount you would spend on restoring your diapers and whala a new diaper stash. (BTW be sure to purchase your new diapers through paypal so your spouse will never be the wiser to your going ons :) )

Now, I'm not sure I could buy used diapers. Borrow bleached ones from a close friend, yes. Buy them from a perfect stranger no. I however, have no problem selling them to other people. That's just me. No, judgements here. Here's what I've done and learned:

Some diapers I sold were never worn. In this case, I ordered and tried a particular brand in medium, didn't like it and had a bunch of larges on my hands. Lucky for me I got them deeply discounted and actually made money.

Barely used diapers hold their value as well. Much the same scenario, tried a diaper and didn't like it.

I've sold well used diapers, to trim my stash. (I also sold with the intention of using the money to buy different diapers ;) ) Those don't make you as much money but still sell.

I'm honest in explaining the condition of my diapers, how I've used/not used them, and am specific in how I wash them. I've had good results this way.

I'm no Lady Liberty, but I can rest easy at night (and wait in sweet anticipation of new fluff coming in the mail) knowing, I've shown many of the tempest-tost of my household the golden door, e-bay that is!

Here are a few of my favorite things

For the first 2 months or so we used a combination of Newborn kissaluvs and disposables. These are fitted diapers, and are great for tiny babies and have a fold down for the belly button. The covers we used were the fitted Thirsties diaper covers. Around 3 months we used one size Bumgenius diapers and the newborn fitted diapers.

Now that our baby is bigger we mainly use one size Bumgenius diapers and fitted Kissaluvs with Thirsties diaper covers.

At night time we add a Hemp Babies liner to the pocket of the Bumgenius. In the Kissaluvs I put the hemp and a Kissaluv doubler on top. I just think the hemp is scratchy.

As far as detergent we use bumgenius detergent, I bought a case and it looks like each individual box lasts about 2 1/2 months. So buy once, it's easier. I got my diaper pail from Kelly's Closet, and like it a lot. We've been using Planet Wise diaper pail liners and wet bags. Great buy too, however I've been bleaching them with the Bumgenius diapers and one of the pail liners leaked and got pee on my hands as I dumped the laundry into the washer. Yuck, guess I'll have to buy a new one, darn ;)

I order everything I can from CottonBabies. They have free shipping, and they have been good for when I needed refunds and questions in customer service.

Since I wrote this post I've changed up a few things :)
I discovered FuzziBunz one size diapers. They are a pocket diaper, that adjusts in several different ways. It's hard to describe so I'll post pictures when I have a little more time. They have wonderful colors. I have one red one, so cute. The month of September they are running a promo where you get 8 diapers for the price of 6!!!! I'm saving to get a couple more red, and their purple color (the perfect TCU color!!!!!).

In the past few weeks Baby B is drinking TONS, we've not had any luck with cloth or regular disposables for overnight. I got Pampers Overnight diapers super cheap (major couponing at work here) they have been really good for us. At one disposable a day I can live with that.

Start your own addiction!!

A quick post on what you'll need ("need" is a relative term of course! )
  1. 12 newborn diapers, 4ish covers (Really we could have used more, and I might get more for our next baby, but this cut down on disposables for the first 3 months)
  2. 24 one size diapers
  3. 6 fitted diapers, 2 covers
  4. 2 swim diapers
  5. diaper sprayer
  6. diaper pail
  7. 2 diaper bags for pail
  8. 2 wet bags for diaper bag/church/day school
  9. wipes warmer
  10. cloth wipes (Get as many as you can get your hands on, they seem to disappear like socks. We use flannel and cheap baby wash clothes from box stores)
  11. cloth diaper friendly detergent

"Hello, my name is Sarah and I'm a cloth diaper-aholic."

My name is Sarah and I'm a cloth diaper-aholic. I've always wanted to cloth diaper my babies. Well, since I found out about them in college. My former youth minster used them on her baby. Yes, as a TCU student I went on many late night internet tangents learning about diapers. Not exactly a party girl, huh? Nothing fed my addiction of cloth diapers than seeing friends' babies with adorable fluffy butts. Wow, that felt good.

Fast forward to August 2010, I found out that I was pregnant. I'm not sure how I broke it to my husband (that we would use cloth diapers of course!). He either actually agreed with me or knew that my heart would break in two if he protested. After months of research and advise from friends, I received my first bundle of joy in the mail in November. From there, I got more lovely packages in the mail. Once Baby B arrived we had a trial and error period of different brands and types. Luckily ,I also found another addiction of selling cloth diapers on e-bay.

At 15 months you'd think I'd be over this addiction, but no, I am switching out my stash and am blogging about it. I have every intention treating my addiction, and maybe this year of staying at home will help. Realistically I know I'll just find ways to make money so I can still get those wonderful packages of fluff in the mail.

Feel free to share your confession by making a comment below, and maybe when this blog is famous ;), I'll be able to look back at this first post and reward my favorite confession with a giveaway.
